Change in meeting location
- The meeting began with the announcement that next week's meeting would take place at Boston Pizza at noon (*but please keep reading as this has changed*). Upon arrival there, each member is directed to sign the clipboard and indicate their choice from the food options on the clipboard. At 12:15pm, the sign up sheet will be brought into the kitchen. The entrance would be by way of the back door, directly into the Party Room. We would start the meeting while we wait for food. However, upon further discussion among the group, it was realized that the Holiday Inn has not been notified of our intention to move. The group felt that we should provide the Holiday Inn with reasonable notice given the 25+ year relationship we have had with them. There was then a discussion about how we came to the decision to move. Initially, the potential of changing locations came to the Board a couple of months ago. There were several reasons for this suggestion, such as: not knowing what food we are getting and when we will get it, issues with salads, not knowing which room the meeting would be held in, issues with AV equipment, etc. It was noted that the issues with the food were brought up with the Holiday Inn before, some changes were made briefly, however they did not last. The Board voted on the move, with the recommendation to bring it to the full membership for a vote. The discussion of the move was addressed at two regular lunch meetings and a vote was put to the membership, when the membership voted to move locations. What followed was discussion about improving our communication as a Club, so that members are aware of what is taking place, including putting processes and policies in place for notifications.
- After this discussion, a motion was put forward from the group: that the move to Boston Pizza for lunch not take place until the first Tuesday in January 2020, and that our Club provide written notice to the Holiday Inn next Tuesday of our intention to move. The members voted on the motion and the motion was passed. In addition, Scott will provide notice to Gord that we will not be going to Boston Pizza until the first Tuesday of the New Year.
- so, all meetings from now until the end of this year will take place at Holiday Inn at 12:15pm, as usual
RHS interact club
- working towards having a guest from the Interact Club to our meetings on a more regular basis
- Brandon is going to work with the coordinator of the club to see if we can find a solution to the transportation barrier that has been identified
- at the last meeting Brandon attended, there was 30 students
- Brandon is keen to strengthen the relationship between the two clubs
Update on Christmas display in Whitney Pier & Discussion on Other Decorating Options
- Scott advised that this year, our club is not going to be helping out with Alan's display, as it would be rushed now. However at start of the New Year, Alan will look to form a committee to organize for the next year.
- In the meantime, if you have a chance, please drive by the Whitney Pier Boys and Girls Club and look at their decorations, and think of any ideas for next year
- There was further discussion about the most recent Santa Claus parade in Sydney, where it was noted that parades don't seem to be going very well these days.
- It was noted that there has been some discussion about Rotary sponsoring a Christmas Village at Open Hearth Park. This would be something where people could walk through and we could partner with other groups. It was decided we would bring Alan into these discussions. It was noted our Club used to do a Christmas show at the Boardmore Playhouse every year. There was good discussion among the membership about other options, including partnering with the local downtown organizations to help with decorations already ongoing, or to set up a Christmas market on the water, similar to the idea of the Toronto Christmas Market. It was determined that this would require a lot of work and we would need someone to head a committee on this. This matter will go on the agenda for the next directors meeting
Loaves and Fishes
- Alfred noted that there has certainly been an increase in need in our local society for meals at Loaves and Fishes. In particular, when he left volunteering in April 2019, they were serving approximately 75 people per day. When he attended the last few weeks, they are serving between 100 to 250 meals a day. He noted that there are only 30 students from CBU each day, so it is not the students contributing to the higher numbers. He indicated they are reaching their maximum capacity and wants everyone to be aware that there is a need locally.
Bulletin Committee
- Christine is looking to form a Bulletin Committee, so as to have other people who can prepare the bulletin when she is unavailable to attend the meetings. In particular, she'd like to see a number of people available and set up a schedule in advance. This was discussed at a prior directors meeting as well. If anyone is interested, please contact Christine. She will try to make it as easy as possible for volunteers.
- We will look to begin this process at the start of the New Year as part of our new meetings. Ideally, we would like to see 6 to 8 people on this committee. She has already heard from two people, who are already heavily involved with the Club. If you are looking to get more involved with the club, this is a great opportunity!!!!
