8) Committee Reports

 

• has contacted CBRM and is waiting to hear back for confirmation that the cleanup would be okay. He has tried to find a price for a tree replacement, for our fallen tree. Hanks is not selling trees this year. He's going to try somewhere else and will provide an update at a later time.

• Last year, the Air Cadet squadron we support assisted with the gardening at this Cenotaph. As a result of COVID-19, he is not sure if the Cadets would be able to help again this year; however, the gentleman who does the planting needs some help. Therefore, Bob would like to see our club schedule to volunteer there, one Saturday morning, to assist this man. This would be sometime after the frost ends.

• This year, $7000 worth of scholarships will be going to students graduating from Riverview High School and $5000 of scholarships will be going to students graduating from Sydney Academy. To date, we have had six applicants from our RHS Interact Club. We will be giving out seven, $1000 scholarships. We have some very good candidates and he is going to follow up again.
• Shawn asked if there would be a way to get photos of students getting their scholarships this year, as there will be no formal graduations (as a result of COVID-19). Bob said perhaps we could get their grad photos from the yearbook and send them to CB Post with a write up, to permit us to acknowledge the recipients (with necessary consents from the winners). The group thought this would be a good idea.

• Joy Saunders, who is 101 years old, and a former resident of Whitney Ave. in Sydney, is raising money for the VON in Nova Scotia, by doing a walk. She's currently living in Lunenburg. Scott would like our club to donate between $500-$1000 to her fundraiser. Jim sits on the national board of the VON. It would be nice to give a donation from her hometown.
• After some discussion among members, it was decided that Scott will get more information about whether there is a way to donate to the local, Cape Breton chapter of the VON through Joy's fundraiser. Scott will follow-up and bring it back to the club.

• The Club realized that we have yet to formally do anything to recognize and congratulate our members, Alister and Melissa, who both recently welcomed new babies. Our Club decided to send flower baskets to each of Alister (and wife Kyrie-Lyn and baby Effie), and Melissa (and husband Brian and baby Elizabeth and family). Congratulations to you and your families!!

11) Area Governor's Report

 

• CBU Rotaract Club – there is a concern with respect to whether there will be students around next year to manage the CBU Rotaract Club. This concern has arisen because, due to COVID-19 the Rotaract Club is not able to get together and there are people graduating this year (concerns about turnover). All Clubs wish to keep this on their radar to make sure the CBU Rotaract Club continues on and it does not fall apart. Donnie raised the point that there may be Interact members from our Interact Clubs that are graduating and going to CBU next year that could join the CBU Rotaract Club.

• Continuing with mental health initiatives - We brought in Mitch Dorge last year as part of this initiative. We want to keep this issue top of mind on our Clubs' radars. There was discussion that perhaps there could be needs at the hospital that a Club or Clubs could take on. A member of the Northside Club mentioned that the rooms for mental health in-patients at the hospital are quite dull, so perhaps a small project could be to prepare a mural, something to brighten the patients' days. Chloe, formerly of Crossroads, now works in that Department at the hospital and Gina is going to follow up with her, to discuss possible ways we could help.

• Sunrise Club Survey  – Linda Crockett of the Sunrise Club is doing a survey to see what need there is in our community, to discover opportunities for service. Is our club interested in doing this? If not, while we are waiting for the results of the Survey, which will take some time, all members are encouraged to think of any projects we can do help in our community.

• District AGM reminder – will be held Friday, May 29 at 6 PM via Zoom. The District wants as many members to register as possible. There will be entertainment. We will need one or two members from our club to attend and vote on our behalf. Bob noted that it is generally the incoming President and Secretary who represent our Club at this meeting. Scott advised that the Nomination Committee has a proposed list of directors; however, the Committee needs to meet once more before presenting same. At this time, he can announce that Darren has agreed to be the incoming President and that Christine will be the incoming Secretary. The group agreed that Darren and Christine will be our Club's representatives at the AGM. Reminder to all to register for the meeting.

• Directors' Meeting: May 29, 2020. It is the same day as the District AGM. Will be held at noon via Zoom

• Nomination Committee Update: Scott, Todd, and Shawn are working on the upcoming executive and will present it at our next meeting

• Noted he is proud of our club for keeping active and continuing to meet during COVID-19

• Guest speakers: if you have any ideas for guest speakers, please contact Brandon. After some discussion, it was suggested that perhaps Corey Vincent from Salvation Army could come and advise of the need Salvation Army is seeing, and perhaps where our club could assist. It was also suggested that someone from the VON could come to speak on how COVID-19 is affecting their work, as we are considering a donation to the VON.
