7) Happy Fines / Sad Fines

       1. Scott had 2 happy fines:

(a) Yesterday he attended the unveiling of a plaque at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. Brenda McCarthy had raised $52,000 for stereotactic body radiation therapy equipment, which will reduce the number of treatments certain patients will require.

 

(b) Scott is now three years cancer free! Congratulations Scott, that is great news!

     2. Todd fined Fletcher for swapping desserts from another table. Fletcher paid $2.00

8) Committee Reports

50/50
- Christine picked the 7 of hearts
- The prize today was $1254.00
- there are now 13 cards left
 
 
RHS Interact Club
- Brandon and Bob are working towards having a guest from the Interact Club to our meetings before the holidays. They will have a report next week.
 
Member Dues
- Alister reminded us that he has only received about half of Member Dues so far
- Please pay your Member Dues to Alister as soon as possible
 
Salvation Army Kettle
- sign-up sheet went around to fill the remaining vacant places
- We need a volunteer for this Thursday
 
RHS Breakfast Club this Friday
- Donnie has agreed to volunteer
- we need one more volunteer for this week - please contact Todd

12) President's Report

Our Club's Holiday Party

- After sending a poll around, it seems that December 4 did not work for members

- there were also objections to the venue of Breton Brewing

- after discussion at the meeting, it was decided that the Holiday Party will be held on December 18 at 7 PM at Gord Card's home. His Address is 1955 Coxheath Rd. It will be bring your own drinks (BYOB). There will be some appetizers available, but no supper.

 

Our Club's Move to Boston Pizza for Meetings

-Shawn has made contact with the Holiday Inn and is waiting for a callback to let them know officially that we are moving

 

Cancelled Meetings:

- Rotary meetings will fall on December 24, 2019 and December 31, 2019. Therefore, these meetings are cancelled such that there will be no meetings on those dates

 

13) Guest Speaker

Maj. Corey Vincent from the Salvation Army:

- he began by thanking us for the invitation to come to our meeting

-he was a Rotarian when he lived in Ontario, and when he moved here, he followed his predecessor's steps and is now a Kiwanian

-he has devoted his whole life to the Salvation Army, where he has served across Canada.  There is a need everywhere

-Our Club has been partners with the Salvation Army during the Christmas Kettle Campaign for eight years

-every cent from the Kettle Campaign goes back into community programs that the Salvation Army runs here

-he shared stories about people and families the Salvation Army has been able to help through the money received from the Kettle Campaign

-last year, from the Kettle Campaign, they were able to serve:

  • 1836 Meals in Sydney
  • 1741 Christmas hampers from Sydney to Port Hawkesbury ( hampers contain everything required for a Christmas turkey dinner)
  • 871 children received toys and gifts
  • 30 children were sent to summer camp
-he mission of the Salvation Army is to end poverty
 
-he emphasized that while the Salvation Army is a faith-based organization, they serve everyone without discrimination, despite what you may have heard on social media or the news
 
-if you would like to have a tour the Salvation Army building, he welcomes you to come by
 
-the Salvation Army building has a toy room, where parents can shop for their own child for Christmas, there's also another section in their building where a person can get their food
 
-if you would like to sponsor a family, please call their office
 
-he thanked us for all of our efforts
