8) Committee Reports

• RHS Interact Club
  • Bob: the club raised $260 at the Cape Breton Chorale event doing the coat check. Volunteers from the club went to Loaves and Fishes. The club may switch to weekly as opposed to biweekly meetings.

 

• RHS Breakfast
  • Debbie and Donnie will volunteer this Friday.

 

• Wilkinson Trust
  • John: this is a bequest from a former Rotarian. It provides for scholarships for high school students. The Trust only allows us to use the income generated from the Trust, not the capital. We generally give out $10,000-$12,000 in scholarships each year. There's currently about $475,000 in the Trust right now. John asked whether we should transfer it out of the care of TD Bank and into our own care. This would require paying the administrative fee to TD for the transfer. John asked that the Board of Directors consider this and bring it back to the club. John's recommendation was that the Club pay the approximate thousand dollar fee to TD to remove it from their care and then our club will take over the administration of the Trust. We are not looking to change the terms of the Trust.

 

• Ribfest Meeting
  • Gord: the layout for this year's Ribfest will be similar to last year. We are getting five rib teams this year.
  • This year's event is July 17, 18, and 19, 2020
  • Lisa: The committee is considering a soft Thursday Night opening. This is something that has been requested by the rib teams from the beginning. In other places, it is very common to have Ribfest go from Thursday to Sunday. Initially, only four rib teams were going to come instead of five this year. The committee has done some bargaining with them and discussed the possibility of a soft open on Thursday night. The committee is considering whether that Thursday night should be used as a VIP package for sponsors. Since Ribfest began, we have not increased the amount donated by sponsors.However, vendors' fees have gone up twice during this time. This could be a way to add value to the sponsors and ask them to increase their donations. Another option is to open it to the public on Thursday night.There are a lot of considerations if the soft opening goes ahead, including more security, earlier set up, etc. A decision will be made on this in the next two weeks.
  • soon there will also need to be discussions on the beneficiary for the next three years as well as other logistics. It is important that the event changes and evolves so it does not become stale. The committee is also considering a VIP tent area. This may include something along the lines of paying $50 for a meal and you will not need to wait in line.

 

• President's Council Meeting
  • Gina: she's hosting on March 12, 2020 at 7 PM at Boston Pizza. One item on the agenda will be Ribfest: the future charity of choice as well as future chairs. Another agenda item will be a new Rotaract Project.

 

• Next board meeting:
  • March 12, 2020 at 6 PM at Boston Pizza.

 

• 100 Year Gala
  • John: reminder that the 100 Year Gala is coming up at the end of this May. The committee is preparing a Save the Date that will begin circulating soon. If anyone has suggestions as to any past Rotarians that should receive a Save the Date, please speak with Todd. We are still selling tables. Each table holds 10 people. Each table is $1000 and seven tables have already been sold. We are looking at having close to 500 people in attendance.
  • The night is scheduled to go as follows:
    • 6-7pm: cocktail hour
    • 7-8:30pm dinner
    • followed by a performance by the HAT: a tribute to 100 years of Rotary
    • This will be followed by a dance, with live music by High Society and the Privateers
  • before the dance there is going to be a flash mob. All members of the Sydney Rotary Club must participate in this flash mob. You'll receive an email with a link to YouTube showing the choreography you will need to learn. There will be rehearsals. It is being choreographed by Cynthia Vokey

Motion on the floor:

- Scott: last week, Alister provided some financial statements showing there is some money in our bank account. Big Brothers Big Sisters is the beneficiary of our fundraiser Curling for a Cause this year. The amount raised from that event is close to $10,000. Accordingly Scott made the following motion:

that the club top up the amount being donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters from the club to $10,000.

The motion was seconded by Dave. A vote was held and the motion was carried.

Scott is going to ask the Executive Director of the Big Brothers Big Sisters to attend one of our meetings and give us an update

11) Area Governor's Report

Gina: she attended the Area Governors meeting last Friday and Saturday in Halifax. Some interesting information from those meetings is that the District has been doing some strategic planning at the District level and discussing the role of Area Governors.

- Reminder of the event this Saturday, February 29, 2020. The fun and games night (aka: "Spin the Bottle Night" - Shawn) hosted by the Sunrise Club. They invited members from our club to attend. It is being held at the armoury. If you are going please let Gina know and she will let the Sunrise Club know., speak to Sean.

12) President's Report

The RI President is going to be in Moncton for a gala on April 27, 2020. This is a Monday. Darren Hanson of District 7810 has reached out to the four clubs who are celebrating their hundred year anniversaries in the two districts. The RI President would like to recognize these clubs with a Presidential Citation (ours being one of the Clubs). He also requested that we prepare a video presentation from our club to help celebrate the hundred years of our club. Keith is going to make initial preparations on the video. There is also a lunch taking place that day in Moncton. It would be good if members from our Club are able to go. Please think about it and if you're interested, speak to Shawn.
